Do you have extra time in Bukit Lawang and aren’t sure what to do? Join one of our local handcraft activities, such as coconut or wood carving and painting on t-shirts, to learn something new while supporting small local entrepreneurs.

Why and which activities can you join?

At Bukit Lawang, we promote community-based tourism that goes beyond theory, involving tourists in local life in a way that benefits everyone, including the environment.

For tourists, this means gaining new insights and a deeper understanding of local culture. For locals, it provides an income to support their families, reducing the need for activities like poaching, which helps protect the environment and its rare wildlife.

So, what can you do with us? Here are the activities you can join:

  • Design and carve your own necklaces, accessories, or items from coconut. Price: 15 EUR per person.
  • Spend the day carving wooden sculptures. Price: 20 EUR per person.
  • Paint on canvas or a t-shirt. Price: 25 EUR per person.

All prices include a local artist/instructor, necessary materials, and tea or coffee.

The crafts you can learn in Bukit Lawang may vary depending on the availability of local artisans. Feel free to ask and share your preferences for the activities you’d like to explore.

If you want to learn more about local life, we recommend the Village Tour, where you can visit local tofu, tempeh, and sugar production and discover more about local plants and ways of life.
